An accomplished oncologist with an eclectic and prestigious educational pedigree, Dr. Mitchell brings more than 20 years’ experience in the field to his patients at the Virginia Cancer Institute. After graduating magna cum laude from Duke University in North Carolina with a degree in English literature, Dr. Mitchell made the switch to medicine, his true calling, completing his MD at the Duke School of Medicine in 1985. He went on to complete an internship and residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, before obtaining a fellowship in hematology/oncology with the University of Chicago Hospital. He is a member of a number of professional societies, both local and national, including the Richmond Academy of Medicine, the American Society of Hematology, the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
