Dr. Randall P. Brewer was born in Shreveport , Louisiana . He received his medical degree from Louisiana State University , School of Medicine in Shreveport , in 1993. His post-graduate training includes completion of a Neurology residency (Emory University 1997) Anesthesiology (Duke University 2000) and Pain Medicine (Mayo Clinic 2001).

At Duke University , Dr. Brewer developed a strong interest in clinical research and teaching. In 2002-2003, he directed the Duke Pain Fellowship. His research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals such as Pain, Neurology, Anesthesiology, Anesthesia and Analgesia, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Critical Care Medicine, Journal of Neurocritical Care, Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, and Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology.
