New Research in the Use of Stem Cells in Alzheimer’s Treatment

Stem cells are being researched in many different fields of medicine. One of the things that stem cells have helped uncover is Alzheimer’s treatment. Stem cells are being used in several unique ways to help patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, a debilitating elderly illness that results in dementia and can even lead to death.

The Research

The exact causes of Alzheimer’s are unknown, and there is currently no cure. Many of the treatments for Alzheimer’s treat the symptoms such as mood swings, rather than treating the actual disease. The biggest reason for this is that there are no animals that have a disease similar to Alzheimer’s, and medications tested on animals have proven to be ineffective. Research into new medications has been prohibited by this problem.

How Stem Cells Help

Stem cells are contributing greatly to Alzheimer’s research. Stem cells are being extracted from Alzheimer’s patients so that they can be used to test potential treatment drugs. The drugs are tested on the stem cells to see whether or not an elimination of symptoms and markers occurs. Stem cells may also have some merit in slowing down the disease, although this is more of a theory that needs to be followed up with additional research.

If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and you are looking for alternative treatment options, stem cells may be able to play a role in your treatment. You can use our service to find doctors and clinical trials using stem cells to fight Alzheimer’s.
